“Fuji Nikki” by TAKEDA Yuriko is one of my most favorite journals.
You sometimes find the expression “I feel as if I swallowed India ink” when Takeda confesses her ambiguous uncomfortableness.
Such an expression!
I can share her feeling deeply.

I swallowed India ink!

My daughter is a university student living in Osaka.
She entered the university this April after 2-year’s “rohnin” life.
She seems to enjoy her student life in studying and club activities with nice friends, which makes me very happy.

The other day I had a long chat with her on the phone.
I had recommended her to watch a new movie “Kiyosu Kaigi”previously, so she had wanted to.

She happened to have a chance to talk to one of her friends about the movie and found that he was also interested in it.
Then they decided to go to the movie theater together on the day the both would be convenient.
On that point he was not sure about his schedule, so he said he would send an e-mail to confirm the appointment.
She was very excited to find a good companion like him who is so nice and intelligent.

But when they said good-by, he said
“If I don’t forget this, I will e-mail to you”.

She was so embarrassed to hear that that she could only smile at him.
She didn’t understand what he meant and worried all by herself for a few days.

What did he mean?
Possibilities:

#1 He didn’t want to go.
Why didn’t he say something like “Sorry, I’m too busy to go” or “I prefer watching movie alone”?

#2 He was really so busy that he was afraid of forgetting.
Then he could make some concrete appointment like “Please e-mail me if I forget to confirm”.

#3 He wanted to show her that “the date with her” was not the top priority.

My daughter and I voted for #3.

There are some people who feel uneasy when he/she can’t take advantage of others.
Sometimes he regards himself as a king and treats others as beggars.

My daughter is never ever a beggar!!!
Who do you think you are?!
I really wanted to shout at him.

Okay, okay, I know.
We have to meet those mean people and it’s just one of the ordinary disgusting incidents we encounter in our daily life.

But I really felt swallowing India ink when I thought of her smiling at him and saying good-bye.

Of course I advised her to send an e-mail politely saying “I’m very sorry I was foolish to invite you to the movie. Please forgive me to cancel. I should have noticed that you are very busy. If you find the next chance, let’s go together” and she followed it.

She and I know that the next chance never comes---.

代名詞bothの前に定冠詞を付けることは無いと思います。

> On that point he was not sure about his schedule
その時点ではAt that point

> But I really felt swallowing India ink when I thought of her smiling at him and saying good-bye.
I feel doingという形は正しいでしょうか?I felt as if I were ...
